I'm not sure it's totally easy. Maybe I'm not seeing the forest for the
trees here but there there's still a couple hurddles here: 

With this HUD display, the first thing I want to do is overlay virtual space
with real space. But having the device know exactly where it is and exactly
what it's looking at and showing that in a non-jittery, non-headache
inducing manner up against my eye ball is tricky.

For the system to track objects, it (probably) needs to have a reasonable
map of the world in front of it and that is still a hard nut to crack for a
generalized problem. 

Then again, maybe a non-tracking display still offers lots of room for
killer apps.


Not apropos of the current question but...
I've tried having variable transparency windows on my computer desktop and
I've never been able to get used to them. Maybe people can't ever get used
to it. So the HUD must block out a portion of our vision to keep us wearers
headache free.
