[Noisebridge-discuss] laser cutter.... CNC plasma cutter for the boxshop

Hm. Interesting ideas floating around here. I probably would say that
discussion about getting a laser cutter/engraver somewhere else is pretty
tangential to this discussion.

I can't imagine Noisebridge as a group renting a container at the Box Shop,
Shipyard, Nimby, or anywhere else. We just moved in to our space and are
most of us are thinking of "what would make our space cool, functional and a
place to get stuff done" rather than "what sorts of tools do we want to buy
and install somewhere" although a laser cutter is both, especially since
it's clearly what the community needs.

Noisebridge's "open door" policy is something that's pretty inviolate as
well. Even if we did want to limit access to some or all of our stuff
(which I would want to avoid myself), it would not be enforceable. Without
anyone hanging about telling people "don't touch that" or installing locks
(where we'll teach you to pick them!) there really is no way to stop people
so long as they aren't grossly offending everyone.

I think it'd be a good idea to tuck something this potentially hazardous out
of the way so casual curiosity doesn't cause problems, but I think most
folks have been reasonably responsible with various tools about the space.
I think written instructions indicating how the tool is used properly would
go a long ways, though.
