Actually, I believe it's the idealism that propels a lot of the ethic of the
people who build and support the space.  I know any representation of
freedom or privacy (which I consider to be related) are both emotional
touchstones for me and my perceptions of actions increasing or decreasing
these elicit a disproportionate response.  The lock, as a representational
object, signifies restrictions on freedoms or the intent to restrict
freedom.

In short, I think it's just that hackers hate the idea of locks on
principle.
