Well, the main place in SF where you can pick up CALTRAIN easily is SOMA
(South-Of-Market-Avenue).  Rents in the less trashy parts of SOMA are
quite high due to other Mountain View commuters.  And the more trashy
parts of SOMA (6th Street, for example) are very trashy; expect to sweep
used needles off your building front steps.

Living near the 22nd Street Caltrain stop might be more viable; you
could live in Dogpatch or Potrero Hill, which more interesting
neighborhood, less expensive, and more accessible to the Mission.

You don't want to live in Bayshore even though it's close to Caltrain.
Not only does it take you forever to get to anywhere else in the City,
but it's also still quite a high-crime area and nobody will want to
visit you (cheap, though).
