Looks like some folks from MIT put together an
educational package to learn about microcontrollers.

It even comes with an LCD screen and interfaces
to a PC (Mac, etc) via a USB cable.
Notably, their USB interface cable is cheaper than most of the
alternatives out there (like the FTDI cable).
