Yeah, Inkscape is a little funky, but hey, so is Illustrator.
Though Inkscape it buggier, I find it conceptually easier to use, and
it's pretty powerful.

Anyway. Windell from Evil Mad Scientists does all his documentation
using it and it looks great.

YMMV, but you can't beat the price, or the fact that  it's FOSS.
