It's pretty offensive (to some of us at least) to be "studied" in the
context of a "consumer culture" class.

Part of what makes us hackers (and I use the term deliberately, drawing
a distinction from "makers" and "crackers") is that we don't want to be
consumers, per se, to be pandered to and exploited by a creative class
that treats us as merely a sink for their output.
