Sounds like a good excuse for a party / project-show-off event to me. ;-)

FWIW though as others have pointed out, NB is open to all geeks
basically 24/7, no membership or invitation required.

For this in particular, I'd suggest you just have a chat with Mike Kan
- he's there most evenings - and play around with it. Usual policy is
that anyone's welcome to use (and especially improve) any of our stuff
so long as they don't break or steal it; with something like this I
think it'd be a good idea to first talk to the people directly
involved in repairing/using it. Mostly that's just so you know how it
works, where it's wonky, etc, rather than a territorial thing.
