There are application notes describing how Maxim's TINI chip and some DAC's
to make (probably crappy sounding) networked speakers -- circa 2004.
http://www.maxim-ic.com/app-notes/index.mvp/id/3266

For the syncing issues, perhaps a Right channel/Mono loudspeaker could be
built as the server for client channels, with auto arrangement with relative
location awareness! Power is very much an issue still, which POE doesn't
help with (POE spec ~25W at the most, right?).

Perhaps it would be liberating to think of the design in terms of the Atmel
AVR family rather than just Arduino devices.
