I used to have tmj from playing violin and biting too hard into a soft
guard. -- joint clicking at best and a clamped shut jaw at worst.

Do you want to try to put together a emg monitor sometime in summer?
I would start by looking at the BCI/EEG devices that Steve C. uses and
works with (neurosky and emotiv) and ask him for more information (
http://brainstorms.puzzlebox.info/ ).

Mike has plans for building a dental transillumination device at
Noisebridge.  It would give users a look at bone and dental masses in
tissue using safe and fun near-infrared light (no need for dental
xrays just at the examination and diagnosis stage).  Perhaps, if you
are willing, we could take a peak at accessible portions of your jaw?
