[Noisebridge-discuss] decent and cheaper web hosts

Hi Ronald,
That sound interesting. For me it is quite simple. My web pages are green on
black, mostly text. I want to create small photo gallery and have there links to
some of my video interviews. In other words quite pretty simple. The two things
more which I would like to do and which may be problem is mailing list (can be
done other way) and kind of "wikimedia" interface. I'm weak in html and I would
prefer to switch for this alternative because it is going to be who is going to
maintain the web page. That is quite all.

I have to say one thing which is quite crucial and which you have probably
guessed already. My knowledge of web page domain register and web hosting is
very, very limited. If you say that I need my own registrar what does it exactly
mean? I've registered my domain name with justhost.com and I've my web page
hosted with the same company. When I have checked now for example on
http://register.com my domain it is said that it is taken. Fine. Again I did the
search at www.whois.com and got the detial information (below) and I've to say
that I'm still not sure if it means that I own my domain rights (which I hope I
do) or not. So what shall I do now when I'm still registered with justhost.com
for next few days but I'd like to do my own registrar and transfer my webpages
hosting to you, if it is OK with you (or somewhere else if there is any
problem)? Can I do a new registrar with someone else than justhost already
before my involvement with them is over? How? Who knows it is me and not someone
else just trying to get my identity?

I know that my questions may seem quite stupid. I think that I do understand the
absolute bases of web hosting / domain registrar, well I hope I do, but I do not
have enough practice and I do not really trust these guys out there, in other
words I do not want to fuck up.

I'll be looking forward for your answer and actually I think that this thread
may be quite useful for people who are like me, therefore not very web
knowledgeable ...

Thanks for your help,

Sincerely,

Frantisek

I also happen to host a bunch of sites for free for friends. It is a cPanel
based server and I actually perform daily, weekly and monthly backups to a
secondary drive in the machine. It is at a real datacenter and I actually OWN
the hardware. You can meet me or already have. You do need your own registrar
however.

For anyone who is interested in paying an actual person for their web hosting /
mailing list etc needs, check out speedypuppy.com it is run by a guy I know,
Jim, who answers emails and has helped me with some config stuff I wanted to do
that was over my head... but comes with tons of tools and access to do whataver
you want yourself.
