What is the cause of these things breaking ?

Is it possible to rebuild them ?

It is the best environmentally and probably cheaper besides ...

Weller in particular is an old solid company. I seem to remember my Dad's
getting weak and him getting some new parts for it, but of course things
have changed. Nevertheless, pro grade tools should be repairable.
