There was an English language book, I don't know how good it was

Grokking the Gimp, http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/  , free html download but
print copies expensive.

However the program has evolved a lot since then and with a much changed
interface.

Beginning the Gimp From Novice to Profession, is from 2008 and a new edition
is forthcoming.

Would anyone be interested in a regular noisebridge meetup on the general
topic of digital art, we could get into a variety of things.  Sunday nights
looked pretty free that last I checked.

Right now I am trying to learn MyPaint and GimpPaintStudio and GimpPainter.
