[Noisebridge-discuss] Community experiment

Simply by having an opinion on this topic I feel like I'm being
played, but let's spell it out.
Rubin's alleged experiment here is about testing how consistently
Noisebridge is willing to apply one specific policy toward welcoming
individuals accused of sexual assault. He's doing this by invoking a
well-known figure who's both accused of assault and also highly
regarded in nerd circles for his other actions. If we welcome Assange
despite the assault thing, how 'bout Jesse? And all other possible
future cases?
Now, I suck at interpreting tone in text media, so I'm not totally
sure what Cameron Hackett's intent was, but they get a gold star for
paraphrasing Liz's email just perfectly to make that really obvious.
The point of this alleged experiment is to determine how "safe" or how
welcome a given individual will remain while there are assault charges
on their name. Its only goal is to let people without such charges
feel secure in their turf against the possibility of being similarly
accused(1). And, dear consensus-obsessed, transparency-demanding
Noisebridge, that form of pre-emptive apologism is not what is needed
in a community space. Discussing such issues as they come up, openly,
publicly, and attendant to their own facts, is infinitely healthier
and safer.
1. A facile answer would be "Then don't assault anyone, duh." I'm not
relying on that argument because it's not always obvious that an
alleged assault really was one.
