'm interested in hearing what the criteria for "acceptable" users is.
Especially when we have people in the space who are attempting to apply
their own criteria in an arbitrary manner.

>From the Noisebridge site:
Create With Us!Our 5,200 square-foot space (483m2) contains an electronics lab, machine shop, sewing/crafting supplies, two classrooms, conference area, library, darkroom, and kitchen. Everyone is welcome to use our many resources.
Find others to create with. Find help with your projects. Help
others with their projects. Learn, teach, share. Come to Noisebridge
and create! Noisebridge's hours
are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. New visitors are welcome any time
(all ages, all skill levels), but it's best to visit in the evenings or
during an event to make sure we have a volunteer to show you around and
make introductions.

I like any experimental hacks for the door opener that make it easier for people to act in the preferred manner. Meaning, if we want people to assess who they are letting in, improvements to the system should encourage this behavior.  I like jake's suggestions here!!

The solution is not to lock up every little thing, the entire point of noisebridge is to have a place where we Can Have Nice Things.

The solution is to use our access control tools to properly exclude people who do not belong, and who only see recyclable copper and aluminum when they look at our hacking materials, and see our laptops as things they could sell to get drug money.

I am hoping to further improve the door camera, so that one can clearly see who they are considering letting in.

I also think we should change the doorbell button to be a push-to-talk microphone so that instead of sending an anonymous and annoying beeping noise which simply stimulates people to push the door opener, one has to speak into a microphone and that sound is carried to a speaker upstairs.

Eventually i hope to convince Consenso that we should disconnect the upstairs door-opener button and replace it with a codepad, whereby the door can only be buzzed open by someone with access to a code.

Regarding the laptops that run the CNC, laser cutter, etc. ...  would it be worth

spending some Noisebridge funds on a couple of laptop lock cables ($13 ea.) to keep

them from wandering off next time they are replaced?  Or were those already in use and

cut through?

I just joined Noisebridge, and I love that it is a very open and trusting place.

However, I think there are a few inexpensive precautions that could be implemented

that wouldn't be seen as unfriendly, just as assuring that general-use items will be

there when someone needs them.

The fact is, if it's valuable and on a member shelf .. these days

      there's a good chance it's gone.

I thought about bringing one of those plastic storage bins with a

lockable top and putting it on my shelf space.   I'm still thinking

      about that solution.
