Just use cyanogenmod 9 -- it supports usb tethering just fine.  I plug in
my phone via usb, check the usb tether checkbox, and I'm online in seconds.
 I don't need any fancy app to help me tether.  The downside is that you
have to find a phone that is cyanogenmod compatible.
