Occupy Forum presents…

*WHAT IS MONEY???*

with Marco Vangelisti and Sam Gilman

Although it is used by most people every day, very few understand money –
how it is created, what forms it takes, and how its creation is at the root
of much of the economic and social injustice in the world. Even among
academics, creation of money is poorly understood. 97% of the money supply
in the United States is created by private banks, not the Federal Reserve
or the federal government. This gives private banks an inordinate amount
of influence over the global economy and hence the livelihood of almost
every person on this planet. Using technological innovation, some people
have been able to circumvent traditional economic institutions by creating
a decentralized digital currency called Bitcoin. Even though Bitcoin has
been recently featured in the news, there is still a large gap in
understanding how it works and how it can be used. Join us at this week’s
Occupy Forum where we will discuss in detail how money is created and how
Bitcoin operates in order to begin answering the extremely loaded question
– WHAT IS MONEY?

*Marco Vangelisti* will talk about how money is created in the United
States and methodically walk through the mechanisms. A former Fullbright
scholar in mathematics and economics at UC Berkeley, Marco is now involved
with Slow Money, an organization concerned with steering financial
investments toward small food enterprises, organic farms, and local food
systems. Find more information about Marco at www.ek4t.com

*Sam Gilman* will discuss Bitcoin – a decentralized digital currency that
is changing the world of payments. He will show how Bitcoin works, why it
matters, and how to use it. Sam is currently founding Coindega, a Bitcoin
startup in San Francisco. A graduate from UC Berkeley in linguistics, Sam
also founded www.fourtones.com, a game that uses Guitar Hero techniques to
teach Chinese characters.

Time will be allotted for Q&A, discussion and announcements.

*Donations to Occupy Forum to cover costs are encouraged; no one turned
away!*
