sure automobile drivers aren't required to say more than is on your
prompt card?

It is good advice if the police stop you on the street, but bad advice if
you are driving. If you get pulled over for a traffic violation, you don´t
want to lawyer up right away. That can turn a regular traffic stop into a
bad situation.

Some friendly banter during a traffic stop is normal and expected. Be
prepared to answer questions like where you are coming from and where you
are going. You aren´t required to answer things like this, but the cop
only has 30 seconds to decide whether he is going to let you go, write a
ticket, or pull you out of the car and detain you further.

There is a point where you should decline to answer further questions - if
the officer accuses you of a crime, or the traffic stop questions get too
personal. But 99% of the time drivers should answer some simple questions
and be on their way.
