attended a FREE stanford database class online going on at the same time we
ran our class and wanted to know how it was...

^ we thought it was awesome and learned A LOT...

^ i told you i'd let you know when i heard of further FREE classes offered
by them and here it is...

^ some a little outside of *most* NB projects but who knows what folks are
privately interested in so have at it i intentionally didn't edit out any

design and deliver new online, flipped, and blended courses. You've
previously expressed an interest in free public classes from Stanford

Stanford University Game Theory II Matthew Jackson, Kevin Leyton-Brown, and
Yoav Shoham Starting May 27

The course is a follow-on to our introductory course and it covers how to
design interactions between agents in order to achieve good social
outcomes. The course -- which is free and open to the public -- considers
three main topics: social choice theory (i.e., collective decision making),
mechanism design, and auctions. The course will run for four weeks.

Statistics in Medicine Kristin Sainani Starting June 11

The course focuses on real examples from the medical literature and popular
press. Each week starts with "teasers," such as: Should I be worried about
lead in lipstick? Should I play the lottery when the jackpot reaches
half-a-billion dollars? Does eating red meat increase my risk of being in a
traffic accident? We will work our way back from the news coverage to the
original study and then to the underlying data. In the process, students
will learn how to read, interpret, and critically evaluate the statistics
in medical studies.

Startup Engineering Balaji S. Srinivasan, Vijay S. Pande Starting June 17

This course bridges the gap between academic computer science and
production software engineering. It is a fast-paced introduction to key
tools and techniques (command line, dotfiles, text editor, distributed
version control, debugging, testing, documentation, reading code,
deployments), featuring guest appearances by senior engineers from
successful startups and large-scale academic projects. Students will build
a command line application, expose it as a web service, and then link other
students' applications and services together to build an HTML5 mobile app.
General principles are illustrated through modern Javascript and the latest
web technologies, including Node, Backbone, Coffeescript, Bootstrap, Git,
and Github.

How to Learn Math Jo Boaler Starting July 15

This course is a short intervention designed to change students'
relationships with math. This intervention has been taught successfully in
the past (in classrooms); it caused students to re-engage successfully with
math, taking a new approach to the subject and their learning. Note that
this version of the course is designed for teachers and other helpers of
math learners, such as parents. The course will be 8 sessions of 15 minutes
each and it will be available, free, online.

Design Thinking Action Lab Leticia Britos Cavagnaro Starting July 22nd

In this experiential course will take you on a journey to learn the design
thinking process. This methodology for human-centered creative problem
solving is used by companies and organizations to drive a culture of
innovation. The Design Thinking Action Lab will provide the inspiration,
tools and support you need to discover the joy of learning by doing as you
tackle an innovation challenge in the real world.

Sustainable Design and Product Management Dariush Rafinejad Starting August
5th

This course focuses on strategies for development of sustainable products
and manufacturing processes. Students will study sustainability in
management of new product and process from the point of view of senior
executives. Students will work in teams to design a new sustainable product
or take fieldstudy projects to study sustainability practices in a company
of their choice.

Mobile Health without Borders Homero Rivas, Eric Leroux Started May 13th

This course provides students the unique opportunity to form global,
multi-disciplinary teams that create solutions to health problems around
the world, and is the first course ever to address global health challenges
by leveraging worldwide entrepreneurial spirit. Distinguished guest
lecturers will present on their area of expertise, and students will apply
concepts to highly relevant group exercises. The culminating project is the
Health Innovation Challenge in which small teams will develop an innovative
solution to an important health challenge and have the opportunity to earn
funding and win other prizes.

Technology Entrepreneurship Chuck Eesley Started April 29th

This course introduces the fundamentals of technology entrepreneurship
pioneered in Silicon Valley which now inspires businesses around the the
world. This is the third offering of the class. Last time, nearly 35,000
students from a global audience formed teams to work on start-up ideas
together. The top teams were matched with Silicon Valley mentors, and many
won the opportunity to pitch their ideas to investors. A significant number
of alumni of the last class are continuing to build their startups and will
be mentoring teams this time.

Finance Kay Giesecke Started April 29th

This class introduces the basic concepts of modern finance and their
practical application. Learn about financial markets and securities, how to
rank investment alternatives, use different interest rates, immunize a bond
portfolio, measure financial risk, and structure a stock portfolio
optimally. Apply your learning in a project involving actual security
market data.
