That's not really true. There's only one formal advantage to being a
member: Members are allowed to block consensus.

There are many informal benefits to being a member. You are allowed to
bitch about having space on the member shelves. You're given door codes
without much review. You feel better about yourself.

Nothing would ever get done if just anybody was allowed to come in and
block the fragile consensus process.

Since NB tries to be as open as possible, it would also be against a lot of
what NB stands for to deny people benefits just because they can't get
voted in or afford membership.
