My apologies. My response to Matt's invoking of a hackerspace pattern
with linking to a pattern that's clearly not Noisebridge's MO
(demonstrating that the patterns do not necessarily apply to
Noisebridge), was overly subtle. Perhaps I should have included a few
more winky faces.

I do not think it's very nice to reply to folks who've started a
hackerspace inspired very much by Noisebridge with "please familiarize
yourself with Noisebridge". I apologize for not writing a more
substantive reply, but posting to nb-discuss is often intimidating for
me because of reactions such as this.

Agreed - but what works for another space is worthwhile to investigate,
especially when things are not working and alternative solutions are
being sought after. For instance, c-base does have a kitchen, but it's
hidden behind the bar and generally a "trusted members only" space.
Perhaps, then, making the kitchen area restricted to members-only and
cordoning off the area is an alternative option.

I really like Naomi's proposal, though I also very much appreciate the
kitchen. Possibly a total kitchen annihilation is the best next move in
resolving the rodent issue, but I've also yet to see a clear call to
action to deep-clean the space. Collectively deep-cleaning the space can
be made fun, productive, educational and therapeutic - and also provide
an opportunity to onboard newer or less familiar folks to the work
involved in maintaining a collective space.

Unfortunately, a good chunk of the time I spend at sudo is spent
cleaning up after folks. However, I have found that personally
demonstrating best practices often inspires others to do the same. I
encourage you to do so, Ron, as you've already proposed.

The problem largely seems, to me, to be a general disconnect between
those who frequently use the kitchen and those who are trying to make
Noisebridge work better. "Telling people what to do" may sound strong
and antithetical to NB's values, and is maybe better reframed as
"telling people how they are expected to behave at Noisebridge."
Demonstrating these social norms, however, requires constant vigilance
at a 24/7 space. I'm assuming better signage has already been
instituted, though I don't personally recall signage with kitchen
protocols being a feature of the NB kitchen.
