hi all,

I've donated two Kinect for Windows v1 "Model 1517" devices and one Kinect
for Windows v2 device to Noisebridge. Please use them to scan, hack, and
build!

The two v1 devices are now plugged into the Dell Inspiron 1 public machine.
I've installed the "libfreenect" Ubuntu package, which includes libraries,
headers, and demos. You can hack on the Kinects from this machine!

To try the demo, run "sudo freenect-glview" from the terminal prompt. You
should see the video and depth feed from one of the Kinects!
(Note: if you plug in and unplug the Kinect, freenect-glview may not work
and you may have to uninstall a Linux kernel driver with 'modprobe -r
gspca_kinect ; modprobe -r gspca_main . See this page for details
http://openkinect.org/wiki/Getting_Started )

I've checked out the source code for libfreenect and OpenNI to
/home/noisebridge/Kinect-dev
Unfortunately, the OpenNI doesn't build and the libfreenect built from
source doesn't seem to work with the "Model 1517" device. Hacking
opportunity here for someone. The devices have been verified to work with
the Kinect for Windows SDK v1.8

The V2 device needs a machine with USB 3.0, which the Dell doesn't have.
The V2 device is in a box inside the cabinet built into the table holding
the public terminal. Please feel free to use the device with the Kinect for
Windows v2 SDK or with whatever else you like.

Pointers to download the Windows SDKs and a free-as-in-beer version of
Visual Studio are on the wiki page for the Intro to Kinect Development
class I recently ran
https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Intro_to_Kinect_Development

Enjoy!
