[Noisebridge-discuss] Anyone playing around in the home automation space?

I've not very hacky, but I had some Insteon gear deployed in my old place. I ran into a few problems:

(1) Accidentally paying $200 for something that's basically a raspberry pi
with some custom software. (ISY-944) It did at least have a nice REST API,
though.

(2) Range far worse than advertised for wireless. I'm talking getting about
4ft of wireless range instead of 100ft.

(3) Old wiring; switch-type Insteon modules need a neutral line to the switch
box, which builders didn't do prior to like 20 years ago. In SF, that's an
issue.

I'm in a new place now with many more lights, sockets, etc., and I'm waiting
for my bank account to recover from a sizable deposit and paying movers before
I reengage with deploying Insteon.

(Granted, this might be a touch less hackery than you had in mind; but at the
same time, I'm hesitant to try to repeatably make hardware that interfaces
with and controls 120VAC.)
