This thread was only intended to provoke discussion, to take the
current temperature, and to see if this mailing list can be convinced
to narrow focus of a conversation down to a single philosophical
point.

If the discussion ended up demonstrating some kind of consensus, then
wow, that would have been interesting. That would have been the basis
of a Direction.  It didn't, though, and that's okay.
