[Noisebridge-discuss] front page translation to spanish

Hi Jenny, and others,

Thanks for offering to help!

If you want to help, if you can, please show up to tomorrow's weekly Noisebridge meeting. These happen every Tuesday at 8pm, and are open to everyone. After introductions, and a few other quick regular topics on the agenda, it's time for items for discussion. Please bring up this topic. After a bit of discussion, there will be a call for people who want to start a working group to help make it happen. And, as Trent said, you do not have to be a Member of Noisebridge to be part of the working group, or to do almost anything at Noisebridge -- just follow our one rule: Be excellent to each other.

Thanks,
Mitch.

Hi guys:I am a native spanish-speaking journalist, originally from Colombia. I belong to the community as I write about privacy issues in SF and immigrant communities in the Mission. If you want to use the online translation service, and then need to hire somebody for copy editing, I am available and happy to help. I also can do translations from scratch, but it is up to the group to decide to what extent that is entirely needed... and when. I truly agree that it will drive more Hispanic people to the community.
Looking forward to see where this initiative goes!Best,

No problem. Anyone can do anything. I thought I said that in my previous email but I guess I wasn't clear enough. Sorry about that.

Not to be a pain, but on https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/FractalWorkingGroup I see:
a group can begin with an individual or group of individuals at any time, for any reason.
Which implies that anyone can start a group (which seems in line with doacracy). But later it talks about membership requirements for the group:
any NB member* may join, observe, or send suggestions to any group. (*"member" means any Board Member, Member, and any other formally approved NB participant)any NB non-member may participate in a group with the sponsorship of one formally recognized NB "member" as defined above.
So the question is, can "NB non-member"s start a WG? Do they need sponsorship from a member to do so?

Sorry if this has drifted from the original topic.

I don't see this as bikeshedding, but at this point this needs to be spun off noisebridge discuss into a working group so we don't all have to be exposed to it. Please use the fractal working group model if you wish to. Note that the fractal working group page needs updated. Anyone can participate in a fractal working group, it has nothing to do with membership at all.

A brief search turns up Extension:Translate <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate> which requires MediaWiki 1.24. From this page <https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Special:Version>, it looks like Noisebridge is on 1.19.1
The cool part about that extension is that it supports "auto" translation of pages by integrating with an online translation service. It also has a web interface where people could translate pages, as well as gettext export for offline translation, which could be used to build a custom workflow.
I think if you really want to translate the Noisebridge website, this is what you want.

Making Noisebridge into an “app” rather than a wiki has been discussed before and no one has amassed the appropriate amount of effort or support to make it a reality. I personally believe that the wiki ain’t broke, we don’t need to fix it, and the path forward should simply be to upgrade it to a version of MediaWiki that supports i18n.

I was going to recommend working on translations for the front-end because it's more stable than the typical 'manual info' that get's updated in noisebridge's wiki, but I guess the whole thing is a wiki. Have people discussed making a more solidified 'app' of our landing page?

Unless you have some sort of deep-seated resentment against Google’s free services, I don’t see why Google Translate is such a bad idea for a page with non-colloquial English phrasing.

In specific, I'm thinking about hiring someone to translate our front wiki page, and maybe some supporting docs.... But I think the front page is locked down right now. Anyone know who I should to talk to get such an initiative going?
