[Noisebridge-discuss] Ambisonic Sound at Noisebridge

Hey Felipe,

yes I think so but the resolution depends on the about of speakers and the size of the room.
If you want to reproduce exact positions of different sounds in space, you’d need a Wave Field Synthesis System ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_field_synthesis <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_field_synthesis> ) in a small room. Some large rooms kind of disappoint in terms of resolution and they’re having up to 2700 speakers ( https://www.ak.tu-berlin.de/menue/research/wave_field_synthesis/parameter/en/ <https://www.ak.tu-berlin.de/menue/research/wave_field_synthesis/parameter/en/> ) - But it’s a different Technology so it’s probably not gonna be a DIY project.

But with Ambisonics it might be worth trying it with 4 speakers. If you have 8, even better. You can move sounds around in space.

It’s all the tools you need including papers on the topic, plugins and videos - Free and Open Source!

This is actually the stuff I’d be trying out first if I can build this at Noisebridge. If you’re interested and you’re currently in SF, I’m happy to collaborate. Just drop me an email.

Cheers,

Alex

It uses 176 speakers but it is possible to build installations with less, say 8 speakers using a technology called Ambisonics. Obviously this would not be as precise but should be enough for simpler installations.

So I wanted to ask if it’s possible to get access to a lot of small speakers and an audio interface with as many output channels as possible. I know these things are expensive but if anyone could spare one even for just a couple of hours, I promise to treat it well. Also, there is nothing that may damages the device. It will simply be used by a piece of software (the spatialization renderer) that sends audio to the various output channels.
