Started my shift about 9:30 pm, stayed until 1:30 am.
On starting my shift, I noticed all the LED sculptures were unplugged.
Don't people know these things are mission-critical! I hurriedly
reconnected them, and equilibrium was restored to the universe.
Where is our compost bin? Vi alerted me that it's missing.
Upon arriving, Veronica's dog growled at me. Later, Justin's wife
Elizabeth also got growled at. Hasn't Veronica been asked several times
not to bring her dog? I say it's time for a sterner warning. I'm afraid
of mean dogs, and I do not like getting growled at, like I'M the one
who's invading someone's space.
Speaking of, the usual crowd of non-hackers dominated the kitchen area.
These folks dominate the kitchen area almost 24/7. IMO, NB should not be
a hangout club-house for non-hackers. They are just exploiting the
space. We need stronger medicine than just kicking people out for real
or invented bad behavior-- we some criteria for why anyone is in the
space-- a definition of what is COOL to do (hacking), and not just a
list of what is UNCOOL (harassing women etc)
Since the reception computer is now the only working public computer in
the space, I had to ask other people three times to vacate the
receptionist desk so I could sit there-- even though my coat and
personal effects were there. These included:
--Harvey, a guy who HAS HIS OWN COMPUTER which he keeps stored in
the member area (is he a member?). Yet instead of using his own
computer, he always sits at and dominates for hours the public computer.
Harvey told me "that receptionist computer is not going to be a the
receptionist desk as soon as someone moves", threatening his intention
to do so. He also complained about the desk phone being on receptionist
side of the desk, so I moved the phone to the outer perimeter so people
could more easily access it. A few weeks ago, Harvey stored mountains of
his personal belongings in numerous boxes and bags under the electronics
bench. Like 10 large cardboard boxes full. A NB crew moved all his stuff
to the elevator anteroom, with the intention of putting on the street
the following day. But, Douglas Benner said he believes Harvey has
re-hidden the stuff throughout the space. Harvey FREQUENTLY crashes out
on the couches, and NOT from hours of late HACKING. IMO, Harvey has long
overstayed his welcome.
--this Asian fellow who hangs out at NB continually, tho he does
not seem to do anything except eat and creep around sticking his nose
into other people's computers over their shoulders.
--a curly blonde dude who was dog-sitting Veronica's dog (as
Veronica repeatedly came and went). At one point, the dog came over and
starting begging me for food, and the blonde dude came over and hit the
dog. I pointed out, "the dog is not going to know why you're hitting
her." Why is this dog still in the space? I'm tired of getting growled
at, and tired of the dog fights that keep breaking out.
During shift, I connected my own laptop to the reception desk monitor,
keyboard, and mouse. I think that's a smarter way to use that desk, if
all us docents have our own laptops.
In order to decrease the likelihood of Harvey pulling the tower,
monitor, keyboard, and mouse from the reception desk, I pulled the tower
only, and stuck it elsewhere in the space. I didn't need it, since I was
using my laptop. Foolishly thinking it would be a good idea to set up a
working computer elsewhere, I placed the tower in the library with
another mouse, keyboard (incompatible I discovered) and monitor.
Someone, please scatter those components before someone hooks them up!
Vi was super-helpful as always, clearing dirty plates and emptying
garbage around the space, and she kept my chair safe when I had to step
away.
And that's the news from Lake Ooglebegone.
