[Tastebridge] Coffee grounds for mushrooms

Oh, yes! The bags we cooked have a lot more colonization.

(Imagine these not blurry or upside-down)

I just realized I'm going to be in  Monterey next week, won't be able to
make the meeting, so here's my update: I got the low power linux box (
slug, NSLU2) running, we can hook up whatever sensors we want to use
(http://linuxaria.com/howto/arduino-serial-ethernet-nslu2?lang=en), [3] a
cam with either streamer or webcam (modules already installed,
http://nslu2guide.blogspot.com/2010/01/webcam-on-slug.html). [4] It's
probably best to upload/store them elsewhere since it's a bit limited -- I
am happy to pass along login details to anyone who wants them.

This looks great! Dana, did you see any difference between the bags we
pressure cooked and the ones we didn't?

I'm working on a wiki for the project - should be up sometime this weekend.

That looks like great development.  In the picture it seem to be more
dense than what I remember seeing in the sawdust-based medium, but that
probably is an illusion owing to the relatively high contrast of dark
brown coffee grounds to white mycelium.   It'll be interesting to see how
fruiting compares.  Oysters are known to fruit prolifically on many
substrates, so it would not surprise me if this turns out great! Roger

Has anyone noted the level of colonization in the coffee grind bags?  I
am curious if they are coming along as well as the sawdust bags did,
which were basically 100% colonized in about five days.  Roger

If we go with wet grounds, we must adjust the moisture with vermiculite,
which I have several cubic feet.  Even if we must use 50% vermiculite per
volume, I think we'll be fine if we supplement with the Spawn Mate II,
which I will bring. I will also bring bags, hydrogen peroxide, digital
scales, a syringe, oyster spawn, and sealer.

 Hi mushroom growers,
I committed to delivering 10-20 pounds of dried, used coffee grounds
tonight. Unfortunately, the weather was unsuitable for drying the grounds
this week on the days that I would have been able to dry them. The weather
outlook looks good for this week but unfortunately I won't be able to have
them for tonight. I could still try to obtain some grounds today but I
won't be able to dry them. I'm not sure if it makes sense for me to bring
more wet grounds tonight since someone else has already committed to bring
them but I'm happy to try to obtain them if someone thinks they'd be
useful.
