[CQ] Programming cable and software for Yaesu VX-7R?

Has anyone successfully used a programming cable with a Yaesu VX-7R?  I'm
growing weary of the radio's poor UI for configuring memory locations, and
would love to be able to stare at a complete configuration listing on a
computer screen.

Did you find software for doing this under Linux, or just end up using one
of the free (as in beer) Windows programs out there?  Also, did you build
a cable, or buy one?
