Unless for some reason you are using something specifically designed
for IR, the chances that your camera does not already have an IR
blocking filter is extremely remote. Sunlight washout is likely due to
scatter in the lens optics. A neutral-density filter in front may
help, but will hurt your low-light response.

But yes, you can scavenge IR filters from many cameras, although
lately I've noticed they are often integrated into the window of the
sensor chip.  What size is your sensor (the CMOS/CCD chip)?

Josh, I've had good luck retrofitting Axis network cameras with
visible-block (IR pass) filters. Some models have  a "night vision"
setting which physically swaps out the IR blocking filter.
