I see this definition in Wired Magazine (404 | Dec. 2009) page 032:

ROS: n. Robot Operating System. The open source software is indended  
to do for robots what DOS did for home computers, providing a common  
platform so developers can smoothly swap apps between, say, the Mars  
Rover and a Roomba.

Any experience or comments?
