[Noisebridge-discuss] Fundraiser at Cellspace October 9th

Just to chime in and since I'll be at Symbiosis on Sunday and won't be able
to attending any meeting on this subject. I'd echo what someone else here
mentioned. One of the original goals of Noisebridge before we even had a
space was to have a space in which -throw- fund raising parties, following
e.g. C-Base or metalab's models. It seems that we finally have some room
for it at 2169, and we're already *paying* for it as opposed to potential
costs in renting other venues. I know Cellspace has been mentioned
repeatedly in the past, but the goal of finding an outside space to do it
was before we even had a lease signed for anything but 83c.
The logistics of organizing are a complicated business regardless of the
location, and I'm happy to help with setup/teardown/etc. But I will say
that I've put on events at spaces smaller than 2169 (and probably even
smaller 83c a few times). Really depends what you're aiming for. But if
you take the space we have as a constraint, it's totally doable. Maybe our
existing sound system is wanting, but I can bring my CDJ's and ttm57sl and
I'm sure I could convince at least one of several friends who have better
speakers/subs/etc. gear to bring it by for an evening.
Again though, certain things say C-base does (e.g. use of lockers by
members) facilitate themselves better to lots of guests for such an evening.
With 83c we just went with shelving, but I see no reason why we can't
evolve in many more directions beyond just having a new larger physical
location. Whether it's better protection for membership equipment for those
who think it's necessary or better equipment to facilitate social
gatherings.

I repeatedly see people on this list fretting about what people *might* do
to damage things, or earlier in this thread mention displeasure about what
they witnessed someone doing. Haven't we already drilled the mantra of not
solving problems before they arise through everyone's head? And if there is
a problem - empower yourselves people! Preventative measures are one thing,
but can only go so far. When it comes down to it if you see someone doing
something that you think is doing harm, step in and -do- something about it!

Anyway, I'm all in favour of fundraising parties; it's something we'd
intended before we even had a name for noisebridge. It's my preference that
we host them ourselves now that it seems more likely that we can, but
barring that, definitely cooperating with others rather than expending money
to throw an event is the way to go. I've seen far too many friends lose
swaths of money in throwing events, which for them was fine as a labor of
love. But in this case it's a labor of utility, and there are ways to
exhibit shrewd financial acumen and still engender community and
cooperation.
