FWIW, our space (revspace in The Hague, revspace.nl) came with partitions
that we left in. We have one larger area, where we can large classes, lectures,
movie nights, etc.. And we have several smaller rooms, each with a purpose.
One is a hackroom, another is the tool-shop / electronic lab ,and yet another
is a radio studio. Some are just storage.

This all works really well. Usually people hang out in the big area to socialize,
and can retreat to any of the smaller rooms if they need to concentrate or just
are not in the mood for group interaction.

Also, people working power tools do not disturb people hacking away at
some malware analysis or what have you.
