Pots are potentiometers if they vary the middle terminals potential
between two other potentials on the outer terminals, say 9v and gnd
for example, if you understand voltage dividers you will see what's
going on there. If only two terminals are hooked up it's been used as
a variable resistor. The outer terminal you choose determines whether
resistance increases CW or CCW.

I'm guessing you're not delivering enough power (current)? Maybe look
up some simple opamp based audio amplifier circuits?
