i was actually thinking i'd get something like this one, but that the
camera was something no one would use. the camera is basic enough that
linux should 'just work' but probably wont be very fast.

the mag specs aren't huge (that's what the sem is for :-), but it seemed
adjustable enough for interpupilary distance that it would be more
generally usable in the space (the eyepieces seem 'standard' as well).
