There are some really good docs on LVM, and Raid linked below.

As far as commercial arrays though, working with them is about the only way
I've found worthwhile. The thing with commercial arrays, if it has its own
storage software it is left up to the vendor as to how to interface with it,
and its command set. There really is no "standard" when it comes to this.
While there are standards like "RAID" it is really up to vendor on how they
implement things and there may have vendor specific caveats.

There is generally nothing stopping people from using VM's to test out
lvm/raid. You can use lvm and software raid on small devices too (usb
keyfobs, external disks, files being used as block devices via loopback). It
doesn't need to be perfect, or high performance for learning.
