single chip integrates N-channel and P-channel mosfets and drive 
circuitry with current sensing and full protection. Simple 7 pin 
connection, current capability 20-40A

about $6 at digikey

a similar part is used by robotpower's h bridge, but that part is
obsolete. looks dead simple to use.

i'm tempted to get a couple just to play with
