Ok, I think my point got missed here.

I'm saying that I'm *not* a heavy user of the space, but want to automate
the process of me chucking $5 in the hat. This would dodge the nasty
potential that someone could be taking my $5 after it goes in. Lastly, it
gets nb one step closer to having a steady income stream.

I think $80/mo is an unreasonable expectation for someone who comes by the
space 2-3 times a month IMO, but think something greater than $20 but less
than $80 would fit my bill perfectly. Something tells me that I may not be
the only one that feels this way. However, right now, there is no way to
have a recurring payment of any amount over $20 if you aren't a de facto
member. I'm saying that's lame, and we should probably do 2 things:

1) Come up with a way to automatically donate some amount over $20/mo to nb
in a recurring fashon without being a consensus member. I don't care if I'm
called a member, an affiliate member, a goat herding member, or a donkey
dong member. Ideally, this wouldn't be a quantized value either.

2) When you see some recurring faces in the space that aren't members, let
them know about the option to start giving money on a recurring basis
without having to go through hazing. Believe it or not, a lot of non-members
don't regularly attend Tuesday meetings, so are generally not aware of the
options to make recurring payments (me being a prime example...people always
talked about membership, but almost never ever brought up affiliate
membership).

When I get out of an airport, and in front of a computer, I'd be thrilled to
try and add additional links to the pay pal recurring payment thing on the
wiki if it is soemthing that is easy to do.

Actually, a point worth making here explicity:

While becoming a "Member" means that you get to take part in decision-making
("The Consensus Process,") paying dues need not be tied to that process.
Paying dues or "making regular donations" need not be tied to this process,
but should instead be thought of in terms of "keeping Noisebridge afloat."

If you are a regular user of Noisebridge, $80/month is the Suggested
Donation Amount, if you are a Fully Employed Hacker, or $40/month if you are
underemployed / a student / an artist / etc. If you are not a regular user,
in the sense that you just come in from time to time, consider chucking $5
in the donation bin when you come by.

Really, the $20 affiliate membership is aimed at people who do not use the
space, live in a foreign country, and mostly participate via the mailing
list and/or IRC.

In short, the "levels of membership" as I understand it:

* Full Member: $80 or $40 /mo depending on need plus the Hazing ("Membership
Process")
* Affiliate membership: $80 or $40 or $20 depending on your level of
participation.

To re-iterate, if you are a regular user of the space, it's expected that
you're contributing financially toward its upkeep.

If you know someone who is an awesome addition to the space, and who totally
makes the space better by their presence, you should consider sponsoring
them to a Starving Hacker membership. I have been paying a Starving
Hacker's dues for a while now; I think it is a great way to help someone
contribute.
