San Francisco residents can recycle home ewaste (and almost anything else
too - including engine oil and chemical stuff) for free at the Recology
center on Tunnel Ave (near the Bayshore Caltrain Station). Their open
Monday to Saturday IIRC. Theres more info on the city recycling/waste
management pages.

Also: If there are things that need to be taken apart, that might make a
fun kid's event or activity. My kids love pulling stuff apart, and
although they usually finish before all the stepper motors are pulled, it's
almost always a lot easier to get them once they've finished.
