The kids event sounds like a really cool idea.

San Francisco residents can recycle home ewaste (and almost anything else too - including engine oil and chemical stuff) for free at the Recology center on Tunnel Ave (near the Bayshore Caltrain Station).  Their open Monday to Saturday IIRC.  Theres more info on the city recycling/waste management pages.

Also:  If there are things that need to be taken apart, that might make a fun kid's event or activity.  My kids love pulling stuff apart, and although they usually finish before all the stepper motors are pulled, it's almost always a lot easier to get them once they've finished.

If anyone wants to donate CRTs (well, only one or two) I'll love them forever, free flyback transformers are kinda rare and I just love making plasma speakers with them.

AFAIK it costs ~$9 to recycle a CRT properly, which is what led Goodwills in Washington state to stop taking them. (as they have a strong policy of correctly recycling things)  Doesn't California have a tax now however that covers recycling costs, so that california residents get free monitor recycling?
