[Noisebridge-discuss] access control improvements

I like these ideas a lot.  I know it is controversial and I LOVE that NB is such an open space, but I cant count the number of times at 11pm and later people just keep hitting the "buzz in" button and I talk like a broken record saying things like "ykno you are responsible for who let in, right? Do you know who that was...?"  only to be met with a shrug and a new face upstairs that stays till 3am and later not really hacking anything..

I think it boils down to late night buzzing in security.  I vote that NB be super open all the time in the day, but new people showing up at 12am that *no one* in the space is familar with is not cool.  I personally would not feel the slightest lack of democratic infringement if a hackerspace has a shred of security at 12am-6am hours that makes me need to call a friend to get a passcode or (gasp) requires me to introduce myself and get to know the community at regular hours.

I vote very much for changing the buzzing sound.  Its too impersonal and Jake is right- it just encourages people to stop that annoying sound by bringing in whatever happens to be downstairs (could be the super mutant mouse coming back to her nesting den to devour us for all they know...)

The solution is not to lock up every little thing, the entire point of noisebridge is to have a place where we Can Have Nice Things.

The solution is to use our access control tools to properly exclude people who do not belong, and who only see recyclable copper and aluminum when they look at our hacking materials, and see our laptops as things they could sell to get drug money.

I am hoping to further improve the door camera, so that one can clearly see who they are considering letting in.

I also think we should change the doorbell button to be a push-to-talk microphone so that instead of sending an anonymous and annoying beeping noise which simply stimulates people to push the door opener, one has to speak into a microphone and that sound is carried to a speaker upstairs.

Eventually i hope to convince Consenso that we should disconnect the upstairs door-opener button and replace it with a codepad, whereby the door can only be buzzed open by someone with access to a code.
