Hey Nicholas, this might intersect fairly well with the wheelchair/scooter
hacking group.  I'll forward this to hackability at noisebridge.net.  We
haven't met for a while, but people in the group have some good knowledge
and resources.

You might try talking with Terry at Hightechbikes who has at least one kit
he sells and seems willing to share information.   Also there is a guy
named Lyen locally who does this and is good to talk with. Take a look at
