I'd go with the 80/20 system.  Structural, versatile, and offers a 
plethora of accessories, such as linear bearings www.amzn.com/B006YVZ6XK

A modified garage door opener would provide the most economical linear 
actuator for this application.  Could even re-use the remotes.  -Greg
